Deudin vs Splitwise

Deudin vs Splitwise: the honest comparison

Splitwise is the category's best-known app, with receipt scanning, payment integrations and native apps — but its free tier caps how many expenses you can add per day, shows ads, requires an account from everyone, and doesn't work offline. Deudin is free with no daily limit or ads, works fully offline, and your friends take part without installing anything. If you're leaving Splitwise, import your CSV — per-currency balances match to the cent.

Splitwise earned its position: it made "who owes whom" a solved problem for millions of groups. The friction arrived in late 2023, when the free tier gained a daily cap on expenses — hit it mid-dinner and the app asks you to wait until tomorrow, have a friend add the expense, or upgrade to Pro (about $40/year, varying by region).

Deudin starts from a different premise: the math of splitting expenses shouldn't be metered. Recording an expense, splitting it, simplifying debts, seeing where the money went — all free, no ads. And because it's offline-first by architecture, the mountain-refuge expense gets recorded the moment it happens, not when the signal returns.

Facts checked July 2026 against Splitwise's published materials and third-party reports; the exact daily cap and Pro price vary by region and aren't officially published.

Choose Deudin if…

  • You've hit the daily limit mid-trip and refuse to pay for arithmetic.
  • Your group travels — expenses happen where the signal isn't.
  • Half your group will never install another app. Here they don't have to.
  • Your trips mix currencies and you want balances that stay true per currency.
  • You want spending charts without a subscription.

Splitwise is the better choice if…

  • You scan paper receipts and split them item by item — Splitwise Pro does OCR and itemization.
  • You settle through Venmo or PayPal in the US and want it in-app.
  • You want automatic currency conversion into a single total.
  • You'd rather have a native App Store app than an installable web app.

How to move your groups from Splitwise

Questions, answered

Is the Splitwise import really exact?+

Yes. Per-currency balances after import match Splitwise's totals to the cent. If they ever didn't, that would be a bug.

Is Deudin actually free?+

Yes — no ads, no expense limits, no paid tier today. If that ever changes we'll say so plainly on this page.

Do my friends need to create accounts?+

No. Add them by name and they count in every split and balance. Anyone can claim their spot later with an invite link.

What does Splitwise have that Deudin doesn't?+

Receipt scanning with OCR, itemized bill splitting, currency conversion, Venmo/PayPal integration in the US, and native App Store apps. If those are essential to you, Splitwise Pro is the honest recommendation.

Can I get my data back out of Deudin?+

You keep your original Splitwise CSV, and an export from Deudin is on our roadmap — but today there is no export button yet. We'd rather tell you that here than have you find out later.

Bring your groups. The balances will match.

Import your Splitwise CSV and check the totals yourself — it's free and takes a few minutes.
